The toy company Mattel has just released a makeover for the most successful character in history – Barbie.
In a previous article, I noted that Barbie has been a:
- President of the United States
- Ambassador for World Peace
- Paratrooper
- Football Coach
- Surgeon
- Firefighter
- Astronaut
- Computer Engineer
- Yoga Instructor
- NASCAR Driver
- Chef
- Olympic Gymnast
- Business Executive
- Cat Burglar
- Cowgirl
- Princess, and a
- Street Rapper
Just to name a few…
Despite Barbie’s challenging traditional gender roles and her almost endless list of high powered careers, it has not been enough for social engineers who are on a never ending crusade to remake society in their own image. So to challenge any prejudices or stereotypes that might still be lurking in the minds of consumers (specifically children and their parents) Mattel has given Barbie “3 new body types” including a “plus size” version of the doll.
Continuing in the spirit of inclusiveness and the challenging of stereotypes, I look forward to the company launching their obese Batman and a ‘vertically challenged’ Superman toys.
Tell us in the comments below how you would give another popular toy a stereotype challenging and politically correct makeover!
