Have you told your sons the legends of their ancestors? Do you know what great men came before you, and survived far greater and more continuous strife than our generations could stomach to fathom? If you haven’t, or worse yet, you don’t know (because, Lord knows, the Boomers severed whatever ancestral ties were left after two generations of vicious needless brotherwar), then it is time to start researching!
There were great men before you. You’ve heard of only a few. Investigate your genealogy. There’s so many resources available now. My sons know they are descended of a High King of Ireland, and of subsequent noblemen, who are still today famed for their oratory, musical and political talents, some of whom were founding fathers of newly freed subjugated nations. My sons know they have heroes’ blood in their veins.
Tell your family’s legend in the most epic terms. Dont lie. But highlight the valour and tenacity of those who came before you, allowing you and your sons to exist and continue the legend.
I was blessed to receive much of the story by direct testimony from my grandfather and my father, who were both passionate students of history like me. I have discovered much, much more, in my own research, and soon I will write the book of our ancestors, with blank pages at the end, so my sons can write my chapter when I am gone, and their sons theirs.
